Dominic

Dominic Thiem is a professional tennis player from Austria. He has been ranked as high as world No 3 by the ATP and was consistently ranked in the Top 10 from June 2016 until November 2021.

Born on September 3rd, 1993, in Wiener Neustadt (45 km south of Vienna) and raised in a small village called Lichtenwörth, Dominic began playing tennis at age four. He reached the ITF Junior Circuit ranking of World No. 2.

Dominic has won 17 professional titles, including one Grand Slam, the 2020 US Open, where he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a five-set thriller. He has finished runner-up in three major Finals; twice at the French Open and in 2020 at the Australian Open.

With a record of 9-3 wins and losses in the 2019-2020 season against Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he is one of only two players with at least five wins against each of the “Big 3.”

His preference is to play his forehand as it has proven to be effective in wearing his opponents down. Ten of his titles were won playing on clay, which is by far his favourite surface. He loves to hit powerful and fast winners – he is known all over the world for his beautiful backhand down-the-line shot.

Thiem is an athlete who stands out for his commitment to sustainability, particularly focused on Ocean Conservation and other environmental issues. He not only supports the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) in Austria and wears the Adidas X Parley Collection, which is made from ocean recycled plastics, but also makes sure to constantly raise his voice for positive environmental change.

Dominic loves to spend time in nature as this is a way for him to recharge. Iceland and Austria are his favourite vacation spots to do so. Dominic considers himself a flexitarian, but he plans to become fully vegetarian at some point in time. His favourite animals are penguins and dogs. He has a one-year old Labrador Retriever named Elon, a cat named Katzi and seven chickens which were rescued from a factory farm.

He likes to listen to K-Pop and the song that is on-repeat is “Left and Right” by Charlie Puth ft. Jung Kook.

His greatest passions besides tennis are soccer and ski jumping. His favorite soccer player is Didier Drogba, who used to play for Chelsea FC, the club Dominic supports. The Austrian ski-jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer is a good friend of Dominic’s and he enjoyed watching him compete.
